Providence dumpster quotes and the local rules behind them

Next door to Providence: Cranston, Pawtucket, Johnston

The same roll-off companies work across the line, and every load ends up at the same landfill in Johnston. What changes town to town is the free city service you might use instead.

We only list rules we could confirm in two places. For East Providence and North Providence we found single sources only, so we have left them out for now rather than guess. Requests from those ZIPs still go out to local companies.

Cranston

  • City trash and recycling collection covers one-, two-, three- and four-family homes. Larger buildings use a private hauler.
  • Bulky items and mattresses are scheduled through Waste Management at 1-800-972-4545.
  • Cranston has offered free bulky pickup during set periods, such as the month of March in 2023. Outside those periods it is a paid service; the state's Cranston listing shows $30 per item.
  • Construction debris does not count as bulky waste in Cranston, even during a free period. That needs a dumpster or a private hauler.

Pawtucket

  • Bulky items need an appointment with the Public Works department. Pickup is curbside.
  • Items go out the night before the scheduled day, not earlier. Pawtucket began fining people for unscheduled curbside piles in March 2023.

Johnston

  • The Central Landfill is in Johnston, at Shun Pike off Route 295.
  • Johnston homeowners can get one permit a year from the Town Clerk at Town Hall, 1385 Hartford Avenue, that allows free disposal of household waste at the landfill, up to 1 ton per trip, once a month. It is for cars, pickups and small vans, not commercial trucks, and the load must be covered.
  • The $6 Host Community surcharge on commercial trucks at the landfill is paid to the Town of Johnston.

For a renovation in any of the three towns, the landfill rates on our landfill page apply the same way they do in Providence.
